A competition proposal for a new lecture theatre at the Science Museum. The brief called for a space capable of hosting an expanded events programme in keeping with the museum’s growing visitor numbers, and suitable for a wide variety of media and scale of event.
Flanagan Lawrence’s proposal included both a timber and a fabric finish, with a steep lecture theatre space inspired by the historic scientific lecture theatre typology often found in universities and medical schools.
Such a design makes efficient use of limited space, allowing for more space outside for resolving queuing issues, as well as maintaining an intimate connection with the speaker. Both material options enable discrete audio visual integration, and the fabric finish would enable projections for immersive presentations.
