Riverside Studios has been one of the most important venues in London for new and international performing arts for over 25 years. With its unique ‘black box’ style performance spaces it has staged work by some of the most innovative, experimental and controversial theatre companies of recent years. The first full programme of theatre appeared in 1978, following the departure of the BBC. The studios quickly became famous for high quality contemporary productions, as well as for being one of the first venues to establish a truly international programme, bringing to London some of the best productions and companies from around the world, often for the first time.
The facility has been heavily adapted since the 1950’s and today aims to be London’s pre-eminent space for risk, inspiration and creativity in the arts and media, in a setting which is energetic, internationalist and friendly.
The new build proposal will provide a state of the art facility for Riverside Studios, creating a new ‘Digital Arts Centre’, comprising purpose built production studios, a cinema, theatre facilities, rehearsal space, a new riverside restaurant and café/bar, along with 165 apartments for developer Mount Anvil that are being designed by Assael Architecture. As part of the redevelopment a new riverside walkway will be created to connect the Thames Path to Hammersmith Bridge.
