Residential York Terrace
York Terrace is a large apartment within a John Nash-designed, 1822 Grade 1 Listed terrace in Regent’s Park. The original house was destroyed in 1940 and was subsequently rebuilt in 1960 as apartments with a concrete structure behind the existing façade. The volume was formerly arranged as three apartments configured as a large number of small rooms and interconnected spaces.
The top floor apartment has been completely reconfigured for contemporary living. The client has a young family but also wanted spaces suitable for entertaining. The brief called for a restrained treatment with no superficial gestures, creating a minimal background that would provide a calm visual foil for the client’s contemporary art collection.
The space planning concept envisaged an ‘enfilade’ of living spaces and a traditional off the corridor sleeping area. The practice paid particular attention to high quality details and finishes, including bespoke ironmongery designed to complement the deliberately pared-down aesthetic of the interiors.
