Abbey Wood represents the Eastern terminus of Crossrail’s Elizabeth Line and has seen the construction of a new station and the development of a long term plan for the regeneration of the public realm.
Bexley Co staged an RIBA run competition, in 2018, for a car park site which sits opposite the station, and we won!
The residential led scheme has 300 homes in a mix of private for sale to local people and affordable housing sitting on a landscaped deck above a car park.
The site is a key element in the area masterplan and opens up an area previously divided by the railway and flyover. Mediating between two levels it includes the undercroft to the Harrow Manorway flyover which runs in front of the Crossrail station and over the tracks. The impact of the flyover has been mitigated by a reduction in the number of traffic lanes and the introduction of cycle lanes on either side and improved public realm. Our scheme proposes further work to the edges of the flyover structure as the undercroft is activated and revitalised.
A taller apartment building sits at the southern point of the site, acting as a marker for the wider area of regeneration and offering wide ranging views South towards Abbey Wood and North towards the River Thames.
A terrace of townhouses and commercial units wrap around the site at ground level contributing towards a more hospitable pedestrian environment. A cycle hub is designed to encourage people to use methods of transport other than the car to travel to the Elizabeth Line station.
