Located close to Lisson Grove in the City of Westminster, Fisherton Street is a residential development comprising 168 affordable and private homes. A community space and sports centre add to the diversity and distinctiveness of the project, consolidating Fisherton Street’s role in the regeneration of the area.
A ‘Green Spine’ runs across the centre of the development, a key part of Westminster Council’s ‘Green Strategy’ zoning – and has been a key driver for the scheme’s massing and orientation. Two apartments buildings face the Green Spine, and align with existing neighbouring residential buildings. Along this new link between the north and south sides of the site are the entrances to the apartment buildings as well as the community space and sports hall. These provide animation along the thoughtfully landscaped space, and attract footfall and activity, enlivening the spine as a public space.
Fisherton Street is conceived as a 21st century interpretation of the classic London mansion block, traditionally built in brick, classically and elegantly proportioned but detailed in a crisp modern style. Since the early 1900’s the site was the coal yard of nearby Marylebone train station and we have retained some of the yard’s historic brick walls at the perimeter of the site. The project consists of two six storey apartment buildings and a row of three storey townhouses. The pair of apartment buildings form the gateway to a unique new landscaped pedestrian route known as the green spine which links Salisbury St and Fisherton St across the site which will form the centre for the community. Parking for cars and bicycles is in the basement provides secure access to the apartment floors above.
Sculpturally - the building appears as a monolithic brick block - carved to reveal its depth and mass - into which we insert delicate metal balconies. The building’s base is defined by rusticated brickwork and the generous glazing of the entrance. In the symmetrical façade above - the carved balcony recesses and double height window openings in the brickwork are elegantly proportioned.
FLINT - have developed the concepts for the interior design ensuring a continuity between inside and outside. The Inspirations are unique to this part of London and to this site in particular: There are two key references -the work of Andrew Carrick a renowned local painter of 19th century – and the site’s original use as The coal yard for nearby Marylebone station. On Entering the reception – the garden in the courtyard beyond is the visual focal point. The link to landscape and nature, both public and private is never far away in Fisherton Street. Beyond the glazed screen is the work hub available to all residents and directly linked to the courtyard.
Entering one’s home – there is an immediate sense of comfort and calm the generous full height openable windows lead to the outdoor balconies, there are warm timber floors, and a refined and elegantly detailed interior palette. The architecture and the interior design is unique and entirely bespoke to Fisherton Street.
The scheme has been the outcome of extensive discussion with the community, the client, and the council. Construction is underway.
