Public Tripoli University Library
The Al Fateh University is Libya’s largest academic institution, offering free education to 25,000 students. The Library is centrally located, creating key anchor points for the University.
The size and scope of these projects sets the tone for the remainder of the University development. Located at the crossing point of the two principal axes of the site, and surrounded by landscaped shaded gardens, the library will be housed in a 120m diameter domed steel structure, creating a cool interior responding to the local climate and its propensity for sandstorms.
The design embraces highly sustainable strategies for the conservation of energy and water, using ancient earth duct technology which pre-cools the intake of air into the building.
The project creates an identifiable symbol for the University and its future role in Libya and beyond. The central circular atrium functions as the heart of the building and is comparable in scale to the Reading Room at the British Library or the interior of the Pantheon in Rome.
