Public   Sadler’s Wells Theatre Trust

Jason Flanagan and his team at Flanagan Lawrence were asked to be involved in a re-presentation of the public areas at Sadlers Wells in 2007. Lady Hamlyn, a Trustee at the Theatre approached the Practice and asked how we could make a significant improvement to the foyers, bars and box office at the theatre, whilst keeping the theatre running and working with an extremely limited budget, raised by Trustees annually.

Our approach was to first analyse the foyers and bars in operation in order to find out if there were any functional difficulties. It emerged that there was a lack of clarity about the circulation systems, the retail offer, the catering offer and the overall presentation of the foyers.

Our solution was to suggest a series of changes to the public areas – simplifying previously cluttered spaces in the interests of clarity and introducing greatly improved wayfinding – itemized in a fully costed master plan to the Board of the Theatre. The result is a series of amendments to the theatres and foyers which take place during the ‘dark periods’ of the theatre each summer.

The first two phases have taken place, involving the replacement of the ground level box office and bar and a rationalization of the lower level signage and lighting to represent the foyers in a more elegant way.   The Theatre plans to continue the refurbishment of the upper foyer levels on an annual basis as funds become available.  One of the most important aspects of the project is the replacement of ‘performance style’ lights illuminating the foyer with low energy, high output fluorescent fittings to reduce the theatre’s running costs.
