Millendreath is a small enclosed valley in South East Cornwall. An area previously neglected, the plans for the 35 hectare (90 acre) site will provide a mix of uses, including holiday and residential accommodation with new leisure, retail and business activities. Based on the urban typology of the Cornish fishing village, the proposal creates a vibrant, sustainable and successful community where buildings are sited beyond the flood plain, integrated into the landscape with hanging gardens covering the steep valley sides.
The masterplan is designed along the principles of sustainable development, promoting links with the local community and economy, and ensuring that passive measures to reduce emissions and the use of valuable resources are designed into the development proposals from the start.
However, a vernacular approach does not fall into pastiche, and the accommodation and spaces reflect modern requirements and technology. The result is a subtle and viable mix of resort and housing.
