Residential Melina Place
An elegant early Victorian villa sits comfortably in a quiet St John’s Wood street. Having undertaken little work on it for many years the owners decided to undertake a major overhaul including the construction of a basement and significant extension of ground floor space as well as a comprehensive re configuration of the upper floors.
The brief to the practice was to design a light and airy 6 bedroom family house which would enjoy exceptional and flexible living space. Our approach has been to maximise the volume of the building, with high ceilings contributing to the sense of grandeur of the spaces and an enfilade configuration of the plan, where no corridors restrict the flow of space on the ground floor and the full length of the house can be appreciated from the front door. Sliding screens and doors allow the space to be divided up depending on how the owner wants to use it.
Sophisticated services and controls give many options to create a comfortable environment, with lighting being able to respond to different occasions.
Natural Materials – stone, timber – are used consistently throughout the house, and ample daylight permeates the spaces through full height glazed screens, sliding doors, and roof lights.
