Masterplanning   Guildford Station

The project was the creation of a new station which would link two sides of the town – that till then had been disconnected by the rail tracks – in a dynamic built form, establishing a gateway portal to the town centre.

The scheme includes private residential and affordable housing developments on land alongside the tracks, currently used for car parking. Commercial uses are grouped around the station with offices, retail, and leisure introducing activity and enlivening the public realm. A key element of the brief was the layout of transport hub uses; cycle parking, buses, taxi and car drop-off; which all lie at the heart of the public realm areas.

The over-riding principle of the concept was to create a station as a ‘civic facility’ – generating a seamless built form across the track, which did not require the unrealistically expensive construction techniques of building habitable accommodation over the railway.

The connecting building is an elaborate passage with retail facilities in a Vierendeel girder.
