Happy Birthday, Live Tales!
A year on from the opening of our award winning scheme for Live Theatre.
21st Sep 2017
Last week Live Tales, a centre for children and young people’s writing based in classrooms in our conversion of a Grade 2 listed Almshouse, celebrated their successful first year. In that time they’ve provided free creative writing lessons to over 1,500 pupils from 30 different schools in the local area.
The Live Works scheme incorporates a host of different functions. At its centre is the newly re-opened public courtyard, Live Gardens, transforming a century-old gap on the Newcastle Quayside into a vibrant public place, providing space for a range of events and performances. The garden is framed by the converted almshouse of Live Tales, and newly created office space generating rental income that will fund at least one play and education project each year for Live Theatre.
Since its completion Live Works has won multiple awards, including a RIBA National Award and three RIBA Regional Awards, a Civic Trust National Award, as well as being currently shortlisted for the BCI Awards and AJ Architecture Awards.
